Winter Camp 2024 Curriculum

Science Exploration Camp

Camp Goals:

  • Foster a love for science and exploration.

  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Encourage teamwork and collaboration.

  • Enhance communication and presentation skills.

  • Inspire creativity and innovation.

 

Day 1: Exploring the World of Simple Machines

  • Morning: Introduction to simple machines (lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, screw). Hands-on experiments and challenges using everyday objects.

  • Afternoon: Building a Rube Goldberg machine in teams. Learning about energy transfer and chain reactions.

Day 2: Eco-Friendly Designs and Sustainable Solutions

  • Morning: Understanding environmental challenges and the importance of sustainability. Exploring renewable energy sources (solar, wind, water).

  • Afternoon: Designing and building a miniature eco-friendly house using recycled materials. Learning about energy efficiency and conservation.

Day 3: Chemical Reactions and the Science of Color

  • Morning: Introduction to basic chemistry concepts (atoms, molecules, reactions). Conducting safe and exciting experiments with color-changing reactions.

  • Afternoon: Conduct a series of safe and exciting experiments that explore color changes.

Day 4: Science Showcase and Celebration

  • Morning: Finalizing and preparing projects for the Science Showcase. Practicing presentation skills and teamwork.

  • Afternoon: Science Showcase event. Campers present their creations to family and friends. Awards and recognition ceremony.

 

Additional Activities:

  • Science-themed games and puzzles.

  • Outdoor science exploration walks.

  • Science trivia games

 

Safety Measures:

  • All experiments and activities will be supervised by experienced instructors.

  • Safety goggles and gloves will be provided when necessary.

  • First aid kits will be readily available.

  • Campers will be educated on proper lab safety protocols.

 

Storytelling & Playwriting Camp

  • Monday

    • Elements of storytelling

      • Discussing the basics of plot, characters, conflict

      • Writing exercises for outlining a story, crafting compelling characters, and including internal/external conflict

    • Brainstorming

      • Guidance in coming up with possible ideas for short scenes

    • Pitches

      • Presenting ideas for feedback

      • Revision time

    • Finalize synopsis

      • Submit a final summary of students’ scenes

  • Tuesday

    • Writing first drafts

      • Craft a first draft using teacher and peer feedback

    • Table read

      • Present scenes for class review

      • Mark down edits

  • Wednesday

    • No class

  • Thursday

    • Finalize drafts

      • Submit the final version of the scripts

    • Assign roles

      • Decide which students will play which roles in each scene

    • Rehearsals

      • Begin memorizing lines

      • Stage scenes

      • Create props

  • Friday

    • Final rehearsal

      • Run through each script multiple times

    • Exhibition/performance

      • To be filmed

      • Open invitation for family and friends
